Prayer Letter

June 2003 July 2003
Twenty-three years ago, when we launched our church in New York, we placed our motto on every Sunday bulletin. Paul’s words in I Corinthians 1 boldly say: “We preach Christ and him crucified … the power of God and the wisdom of God.”Read The Document

I would like to express my deep gratitude to your recent gift for our ministry.  Your gift came at an hour of need, and will be used in our teaching and literature ministry in the coming months.  Thank you!

It is encouraging to know that we have prayer partners across the country, and some overseas. The beginning of a new year brings new opportunities to serve, as well as old, on-going responsibilities. God is faithful to strengthen us each day. Read The Document An important part of my life is to read quality books, not only in my specific field of teaching and publishing, but more widely to gain perspective. Let me share some of my recent studies. Read The Document

Do we need new methods? Or the old message?

We need your prayers and encouragement for a busy Fall season of ministry. Read The Document "Bless the Lord, O my soul!" This Thanksgiving Season, I have much to give thanks for: Read The Document Christmas is the time when we remember that the Second Person of the Trinity, God the Son, took on human nature - spirit and body. He became like us, yet without sin. He became an "ordinary" person - in fact, a poor man - that we may become rich. Read The Document

From mid-June to mid-July, I teach or speak 101 times. After teaching at Rev. Stephen Tong's Reformed Institute (New York, June 18-22), I flew to Singapore (via Hong Kong) to teach at Singapore Bible College and Malaysia Bible Seminary. We are also making great progress in publishing, and giving lectures and concerts here in Singapore.  Read The Document In the past month or two, I have many things to be grateful for many things: 50 students attended "Introduction to Reformed Theology," at the Reformed Institute in New York. Rev. Stephen Tong invited me to serve as Provost for the Reformed Institute (Asia), responsible for faculty and curriculum.  Read The Document Tomorrow is here today - complex, diverse, exciting, post-modern, post-Christian. Tomorrow's leaders, especially in Asia, ask for guidance and resources. Are we ready? Read The Document

In this Easter season, it is with great joy and expectation that we celebrate the resurrection of our Savior. He is risen!   Read The Document One of the most encouraging things is to meet people in God's kingdom, who have experienced something in life to convince them about the basis for our ministry. On a hot morning in March, we were meeting with our translators outside a "Kopitiam" (coffee shop) in Singapore. A team member shared about the experiences she had with her husband, while living in Scotland.   Read The Document Thank God He has given us strategic students in our teaching ministry. Seminary students from Singapore and Malaysia include urban Christians preparing for ministry. Christian leaders from the 10/40 window travel overseas to receive training at great cost. Asia's pastors often return to seminary for further studies. Read The Document

It is encouraging to receive your gift at the beginning of this new year.  God is providing through you what we need to accomplish our ministry goals! Read The Document Many friends understand that China Horizon is a "ministry to mainland Chinese scholars." Are we? Is China Horizon a "mainland Chinese ministry"? Read The Document In the Old Testament, Ezra (chapter 7) gave us a wonderful example of revival. As a man of God, Ezra was determined to study the Word of God, meditate on it, teach it and obey it. (Our church is using this theme for our spring retreat this month!)   Read The Document

Globalization is here to stay.  One sign of it is Taiwan’s announcement (February 8, 2000) that it will adopt the pinyin system of romanizing Chinese characters.  This is a giant step toward making names and terms uniform.  Read The Document Teaching and defending the Word of God is the task of theology and apologetics.  This is the heartbeat of China Horizon’s convictions and ministry commitments through the year 2000: Read The Document

Summer is beautiful in California: the weather is warm, and people are on holiday.  It can also be hot and dry.  So in China Horizon we have good news to report, but also are facing a “dry spell,” as many Christian organizations go through in the summer. Read The Document

I revisited this passage in my devotions recently: “Ezra prepared his heart to seek the Law of the Lord, and to do it, and to teach statutes and ordinances in Israel” (Ezra 7:10).  To love God’s Word, to obey it and to teach it … what higher calling is there in life?  This, indeed, is God's call on my life. Read The Document
