CHINA HORIZON 1605 E. Elizabeth Pasadena, CA 91104 September 1999 Dear Supporter of China Horizon: I revisited this passage in my devotions recently: "Ezra prepared his heart to seek the Law of the Lord, and to do it, and to teach statutes and ordinances in Israel" (Ezra 7:10). To love God's Word, to obey it and to teach it ... what higher calling is there in life? This, indeed, is God's call on my life. Everywhere we travel, at inter-church conferences in Oregon (August 20-22) and in Japan (Tokyo and Yokohama, August 24-September 6), God's people are responding to the proclamation and exposition of His Word. Christians today are looking for something beyond a weak diet of spiritual climax experiences, or practical skills for ministry. Chinese church leaders are deeply involved in ministry; they need, and demand a clear, strong, solid and faithful proclamation of the doctrines taught in Scripture. Nothing less will do for meeting 21st century challenges! This is our calling. This is what your support frees us to do. We are particularly encouraged that mainland Chinese intellectuals (PRCs) and Fujianese migrant laborers in Japan are wide open to the gospel. My last session with them lasted 5 hours and 40 minutes! It reminds me of the situation in the USA about 10 years ago. The harvest is ripe! We are grateful that Mildred can accompany me on this fruitful ministry trip. Please pray that I will make good progress this month in studying the writings of "mainland Chinese intellectuals on Christian theology." Thank God for this unique opportunity! Continue to uphold my preaching ministry: October 4-13, missions conference, and theology / church history classes at Miri Gospel Chapel, Miri, Sarawak, East Malaysia. The Enemy is strong, but Christ's Spirit is all-powerful. We need to lean on him. Thank you for praying. For Christ and Chinese minds, Samuel Ling President
