CHINA HORIZON 1605 E. Elizabeth Pasadena, CA 91104 July 1999 Dear Supporter of China Horizon: Summer is beautiful in California: the weather is warm, and people are on holiday. It can also be hot and dry. So in China Horizon we have good news to report, but also are facing a "dry spell," as many Christian organizations go through in the summer. God has been very gracious to us. Since we received news of the matching grant in mid-February, over $40,000 has been pledged. $34,000 of this amount has been received. This allows me to move ahead with the 12-month research project on "Mainland Chinese Intellectuals and Christian Theology" on September 1. The Maclellan Foundation has raised the target from $40,000 to $50,000; we are most grateful. At the writing of this letter, four manuscripts are moving toward readiness for the printing press. While things can be hectic, there is a sense of anticipation, that we will see the fruit of our labors soon. Please remember Janet Chen as she edits manuscripts, and mentors potential pastors and missionaries among Asian Americans. Pray for Mildred, my wife, as she oversees finances and administration (as a volunteer). Pray for me as I teach and speak: June 22-July 5 Singapore - various churches; Singapore Bible College; and CCCOWE's World Chinese Youth Missions Convention July 26-August 6 "Systematic Theology I," Logos Seminary, Los Angeles August 20-22 Oregon Chinese Churches Summer Conference August 24-29 Tokyo International Church Summer Conference We are hosting a mainland Chinese scholar to visit several seminaries in the U.S. this summer. Pray that this dear friend, who is very influential in China in the fields of poetic theory and literary theory, may find real deep faith in Christ to be the satisfaction of his soul. I will be hosting him July 19-22 in California. For Christ and Chinese minds, Samuel D. Ling
